Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add egg and vanilla to the butter mixture and mix well.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients.
  6. Roll dough on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness.
  7. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters and place on baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
  9. Let cookies cool completely before decorating.
  10. For royal icing, mix powdered sugar, water, and almond extract until smooth.
  11. Add food coloring if desired and decorate cookies.
