Candy cane cookies decorated with royal icing.
Ingredients

- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
- 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until light.
- Add egg, vanilla, and peppermint extracts. Mix well.
- Gradually add flour mixture. Combine until smooth.
- Divide dough; tint half with red food coloring.
- Roll out both colors into ropes. Twist together to form canes.
- Place on baking sheets and bake for 9-11 minutes.
- Cool completely before icing.
- Decorate with royal icing once cooled.
Notes
- Store cookies in an airtight container.
- Use a piping bag for detailed icing work.
- Adjust peppermint extract to taste.
