Description

A simple recipe for crusty Italian bread.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until combined.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a cloth. Let it rise for 1 hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  7. Place the loaf on a baking sheet and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  8. Make slashes on top of the loaf and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool before slicing.

Notes

  • Store bread in a paper bag for freshness.
  • For a crunchier crust, place a pan of water in the oven while baking.
